Ohtani signs $30 mil. deal with Angels for 2023 season NHK

The Los Angeles Angels say two-way superstar Ohtani Shohei has signed a one-year deal worth 30 million dollars for the 2023 season.

The deal is the largest one-year contract ever given to a Japanese player in Major League Baseball.

US media say the previous record annual salary for a Japanese player was pitcher Darvish Yu's contract with the Chicago Cubs for 2018 that was worth 25 million dollars.

Ohtani will be a free agent after the 2023 season unless he signs a new long-term contract.

Ohtani is batting .276 with 34 homers. As a pitcher, he has won 15 games with 213 strikeouts this season.
Ohtani moved from the Nippon-Ham Fighters to the Los Angeles Angels through a posting system in 2017.

He agreed to a two-year, 8.5 million-dollar deal with the team in 2021.
