Japanese sake brewers and companies are promoting their products at an annual fair in France. The eighth "Salon du Sake," one of the largest sake fairs in Europe, opened in Paris on Saturday. This year's event features more than 400 brands of Japanese sake. Brewers from the prefectures of Hiroshima and Niigata are among the participants. Exports of the Japanese beverage to France have more than tripled over the past decade, with sales up more than five-fold. Sylvain Huet, the head of the event's organizing group, said France is the fastest growing market for Japanese sake in Europe, and demand in the country could increase further. A senior official of the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, Miyake Kiyotsugu, took part in the fair. He said Japanese sake seems to be gaining popularity in France. He said that wine sommeliers have learned to recommend sake to drink with French dishes. Miyake also said that more and more brewers are putting labels in French on their bottles that explain how their products are made and what characteristics they have. He said makers are also promoting various types of sake, such as cloudy or sparkling ones. About 5,000 people are expected to visit the fair, which runs through Monday.
