Indonesian authorities say at least 129 people were killed after a professional soccer league match in East Java province ended in a riot on Saturday. Police say supporters from the losing home team invaded the pitch and officers fired tear gas. They say some suffocated and others were trampled, leaving at least 129 supporters and police officers dead and about 180 others injured. Some fans reportedly turned violent after Arema FC, based in East Java's Malang, suffered its loss against its rival, Persebaya Surabaya. Police say that after tear gas was unleashed to stop the supporters, people rushed to an exit gate, triggering a stampede. The Reuters news agency says it "appears to be one of the world's worst stadium disasters." The Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1, to which Arema FC belongs, has suspended all games for a week following the incident. The Football Association of Indonesian says an investigation has been launched. Two Japanese players performed in the match, one each on both teams. Persebaya Surabaya's Japanese forward scored the winning goal.
