Japanese Prime Minister pledges more investment in advanced scientific fields NHK

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has pledged that the government will team up with the private sector and accelerate investment in advanced scientific fields to promote economic security.

Kishida gave a speech in English at an international conference on science and technology that opened in the western Japanese city of Kyoto on Sunday.

He said, "My administration upholds the concept of a new form of capitalism that turns social challenges such as climate change into engines of growth."

Kishida called innovation through science and technology "a major pillar of my concept."

He said his government "will strengthen basic research capabilities, including investment in people, as the very source of innovation."

He added that it will also "promote international brain circulation by collaborating with like-minded countries which share values."

The prime minister also spoke about how the government plans to promote economic security. He pledged to "foster the formulation of national strategies and national targets and speed up investments through public-private partnership in the fields of quantum technology, AI and biotechnology."

Kishida added, "We will also develop a set of principles for appropriate use of science in collaboration with other countries."
