A group of German parliamentarians in Taipei has expressed support for Taiwan should it come under military threat.

The delegation met Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday.

Tsai thanked Germany, which in August compiled the Group of Seven Foreign Ministers' Statement on Preserving Peace and Stability Across the Taiwan Strait as the group's chair.

The text was released in response to China's "aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait." The Chinese military launched large-scale drills in the seas and skies off Taiwan following a visit there by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The cross-party delegation of six is headed by German-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman Klaus-Peter Willsch of the opposition Christian Democratic Union.

Willsch said Germany's Parliament supports strengthening cooperation, exchange and in particular diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

He said parliamentary debates and issued statements outline the lawmakers' eagerness to support Taiwan should it come under military threat.

Lawmakers from other nations, including France, continue to go to Taiwan despite Beijing's strong opposition to Pelosi's visit in August.

Taiwan's foreign ministry welcomed the latest visit, saying yet another key European nation expressed its unwavering support for Taiwan through concrete action.
