A pop-up shop in Hong Kong is attracting fans of the popular Japanese manga character Doraemon. The store opened on Friday at a shopping mall on the Kowloon Peninsula and will operate for about three weeks. Visitors can take photos with a one-meter-high cutout of the robot cat Doraemon and other characters in the series, which was created by Fujiko F. Fujio. Broadcasts of the Doraemon anime TV show began in the 1980s in Hong Kong. Animated films have also added to the huge popularity across several generations. A man in his 60s said he came to the shop with his grandchild who likes the anime's theme song. A woman in her 30s said she has been a fan of Doraemon since she was a child. She said she cannot visit Japan now, so she has to make do with enjoying it in Hong Kong. Japanese anime is popular in the city. Animated shows, including Pocket Monsters, known as "Pokemon," have been aired on TV, and there are shops selling merchandise of "My Neighbor Totoro" and other characters.
