Odakyu Department Store main building in Shinjuku closed for redevelopment NHK

The main building of Odakyu Department Store in Tokyo's Shinjuku district has been closed amid a comprehensive redevelopment project around Shinjuku Station.

Business at the building on the west side of the station ended on Sunday after 55 years of operation. Odakyu will continue selling goods at a building next to it.

The store was crowded with shoppers. Many people took photos of the main building, which will be demolished, and thanked staff and the facility.

A 65-year-old man said he went to the store when he was a child, and is sad to see it go. But he added that he looks forward to seeing changes in Shinjuku.

After the demolition, a 260-meter, 48-story complex with offices and shops is to be built on the land in fiscal 2029.

The area around Shinjuku Station was developed in the 1960s when Japan experienced high economic growth. Many of the buildings there went up during the period.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and others have been pressing ahead with a comprehensive redevelopment project for the station and its surrounding area.

They aim to complete the project in the 2040s. Other department stores and buildings in the area are to be rebuilt, and a pedestrian deck connecting the station's east and west gates is also planned.
