Officials in Florida say at least 54 people have died due to Hurricane Ian which ripped through the southern US state. The powerful hurricane made landfall on the Florida Peninsula on Wednesday of last week and crossed from west to east before moving out to the Atlantic. The storm inundated and destroyed homes and buildings in Florida. In Fort Myers and surrounding areas in the west of the peninsula, search and rescue workers are visiting residences around the clock to check whether anyone is stuck in their homes. They had rescued more than 800 people by Monday. Local authorities say they had confirmed at least 54 deaths by Monday. Property damage and the death toll for the entire state are not yet known. Media outlets estimate, based on information from local authorities, more than 60 people may have died across the state. US President Joe Biden said Florida has seen some of the worst damage in US history. He plans to visit the state as early as Wednesday.
