A religious group previously known as the Unification Church says it will cap the amount of cash donations from its members in Japan to 30 percent of their monthly income.
                
Teshigawara Hideyuki, who heads the group&#039;s reform unit, made the announcement in a news conference on Tuesday. The group is now called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.
                
Last month, the group said it would prevent excessive donations that could lead to financial difficulties for members and their families.
                
But the group came under criticism due to a lack of concrete measures.
                
On donations that exceed 30 percent of monthly income, Teshigawara said the group will check whether funds are from salaries or financial assets, and if donations are made with family consent. He said the group will keep records and issue receipts so it can check them in case of trouble.
                
Teshigawara also said the group will regularly check the financial status of members who make donations.
                
He added that it will depend on each member&#039;s income to determine whether donations of over 30 percent of monthly income are excessive.
                
Referring to the new announcement, a lawyer of the National Network of Lawyers Against Spiritual Sales, which supports former group members, expressed doubts about the plan.
                
Another lawyer said there is no change in the group&#039;s stance that donations are based on the faith of each member. The lawyer stressed that the top priority for the group is to make up for past damage.
