Japan's Foreign Ministry says its ambassador to Ukraine and several other staff members have resumed embassy operations in Kyiv. Ambassador Matsuda Kuninori and embassy employees had been evacuated to Poland amid Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. They continued to provide information to Japanese nationals in Ukraine. The Foreign Ministry says work in Kyiv resumed on Wednesday. The ministry says the decision to return them to the city was based on a comprehensive assessment including that of the local security situation. It notes that other Group of Seven countries have resumed operations there as well. The ministry says it will keep the number of staff to a minimum for the time being. It says operations will be limited to tasks such as collecting information and maintaining contacts with countries including Ukraine. Consular services such as the protection of Japanese residents will continue to be handled at the embassy in the Polish capital of Warsaw. A liaison office set up in Lviv in western Ukraine has been closed following the resumption of activities in Kyiv. The Foreign Ministry says it will closely monitor the situation in Ukraine as it considers further expanding operations.
