UNSC to hold emergency meeting on North Korea NHK

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss the North's latest launch.

The US Ambassador to the UN tweeted that her country called for the meeting. Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the council should address what she called a dangerous missile launch.

She said North Korea's ability to advance its unlawful ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programs must be limited.

The Security Council has been divided on how to deal with the North's repeated launches.

Western countries are calling for stepped up pressure on Pyongyang. China and Russia say sanctions should be eased.

Observers say the Security Council is unlikely to agree on a concerted response at Wednesday's emergency meeting.
