North Korea has yet to announce its launch on Tuesday of a ballistic missile, in what appears to be a shift from its practice of showing off its missile capabilities.
The South Korean military said the North fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile eastward from around Mupyong-ri in the northern province of Jagang on Tuesday morning. It said the missile flew over Japan, traveling about 4,500 kilometers before falling into the ocean.
No North Korean media outlets had reported on the launch as of Wednesday morning. The Wednesday edition of the ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, carried an editorial calling for the implementation of party measures on the front page.
This is the 10th straight time since May that the country has refrained from announcing a ballistic missile launch.
Before that, the country used to announce its launches on the following day at the latest, except when it had unsatisfactory results, such as mid-air explosions.
Observers say the shift may be aimed at giving the impression that missile test-firing and training have now become a routine practice. They also say North Korea may have become unwilling to expose its capabilities.
