Myanmar military chief again not invited to ASEAN summit NHK

Cambodia says it will not invite the head of Myanmar's military to a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to be held next month.

A spokesperson for Cambodia's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Myanmar's Min Aung Hlaing will not be invited to the meeting. The spokesperson said Cambodia asked Myanmar to send a nonpolitical representative.

Cambodia is the chair of ASEAN meetings this year.

Diplomatic sources say Myanmar's military reacted angrily and said it would not send a representative.

This is the second straight year ASEAN has declined to invite Min Aung Hlaing to the summit. The group has been showing a strict stance against the junta even though it has a principle of noninterference in other members' internal affairs.

After the military staged the coup, it reached agreements with ASEAN, including an immediate stop to violence against civilians. But little progress has been made by the military toward meeting those pledges.

In July, the junta executed four people, despite ASEAN's opposition.

A joint statement issued at the ASEAN foreign ministers meeting in August called on the Myanmar military to improve the situation.
