Joko vows thorough investigation into fatal soccer stadium stampede NHK

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has vowed to clarify the full picture of the deadly stadium stampede after a professional soccer match in East Java's Malang city.

Some supporters of the defeated team ran onto the field in anger on Saturday. Police responded by firing tear gas, causing a stampede among panicked fans.

Police say they have so far confirmed 131 deaths.

The president on Wednesday visited a hospital where wounded people are being treated and inspected the stadium.

Joko said locked exits may have been a factor in the large number of casualties.

He said nothing must be covered up, those who failed in their duties will be sanctioned and if crimes were committed, the perpetrators will be punished.

Criticism against the government and police is rising in the country. Some say the use of tear gas went too far.
