The Japanese government is seeing the weaker yen as leverage to increase exports of food, farm and marine products. Officials have agreed to do all they can to promote these fields.
Government officials held a meeting at the prime minister's office on Wednesday.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary, Matsuno Hirokazu told ministers that the government needs to maximize Japan's earning power, as the weaker yen has expanded the potential of exports. He said "I ask relevant ministries to implement measures as soon as possible and work together to establish systems to support Japan's exports."
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is working on plans to promote the development of such products. Ministry officials aim to include them in the government's new comprehensive economic package to be compiled later this month.
The ministry says Japan's exports reached 882.6 billion yen, or 6.1 billion dollars, between January and August. That's up 14.6 percent from a year earlier.
The government has set an annual export target of 2 trillion yen, or 13.8 billion dollars, in 2025. But the officials agreed to aim to reach that goal sooner.
