Former Vietnamese consul general in Osaka arrested on suspicion of taking bribes NHK

Vietnamese authorities arrested on Tuesday the country's former senior diplomat in Japan on suspicion of accepting bribes.

The arrested diplomat is Nguyen Hong Ha, the former Consul General of Vietnam in Osaka.

Multiple local media allege that the diplomat took bribes while in office last year in exchange for tickets on government-chartered repatriation flights from Japan to Vietnam, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

As Consul General, he had been involved in the effort to coordinate flights to send Vietnamese nationals in Japan back home.

The Vietnamese government arranged repatriation flights from more than 60 countries and regions during the pandemic, and brought home more than 200,000.

In connection with the repatriation program, more than 20 senior government officials and others have been arrested. A former deputy foreign minister who was to be appointed Ambassador to Japan was arrested in April on suspicion of bribe-taking.
