Indonesian police say six people, including police officers, will face criminal charges relating to a stampede at a soccer stadium that killed more than 100 people. The incident occurred last Saturday after a professional soccer match in Malang, East Java province. The police fired tear gas after fans of the losing team stormed the pitch. This caused a stampede of panicked spectators. Police say at least 131 people have been confirmed dead. The government says 35 are aged between three and 17. The national police chief told reporters on Thursday that three police officers would face criminal charges. He said one league executive and two officials in charge of security from the host team would also be charged. The police officers are believed to have ordered the use of tear gas despite a ban on its use inside stadiums, while the league executive is suspected of neglecting stadium safety checks. The security officers are said to have allowed more spectators than allowed by the capacity limit and hindered the evacuation process. Both are suspected of negligence resulting in death. Meanwhile, the government has set up a special task force to look into the cause of the incident. It says it hopes to complete the investigation within a month.
