A former banquet facility preserved as a memorial site of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan has been found vandalized.
                
A total of 327 people survived the disaster after they took refuge on the rooftop of the Takano Kaikan building in Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture.
                
A hotel that manages the building shows it as part of its bus tour to give visitors a chance to glimpse real damage from the disaster.
                
On Sunday, hotel employees found a hole in the wall of a staircase between the third and fourth floors, and glass on a door leading to the rooftop broken when they were guiding bus tour participants. The employees say the building is usually closed off and there was no damage to the wall and glass on the previous day.
                
Police are investigating the matter after they received a report of damage from the hotel.
                
The tour has now resumed after the damage was repaired.
                
Vice president of the hotel operator, Abe Ryujiro, said it is a pity that someone committed this despicable act. He said the company will take advice from experts and introduce measures to prevent it from recurring.
