Japan's health ministry confirms 33,440 new cases of coronavirus NHK

Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 33,440 new cases of the coronavirus nationwide on Thursday.

The daily tally was down 8,733 from a week ago.

The ministry also says 91 people died after contracting the virus, up 17 from Wednesday.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was 149, down 11 from Wednesday.

In the capital Tokyo, the ministry confirmed 3,042 new cases of the virus on Thursday. The figure was down 1,990 from a week ago.

Seven people died after contracting COVID-19 in the capital.

The number of seriously ill patients was 10, unchanged from Wednesday.
