Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 33,440 new cases of the coronavirus nationwide on Thursday. The daily tally was down 8,733 from a week ago. The ministry also says 91 people died after contracting the virus, up 17 from Wednesday. The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was 149, down 11 from Wednesday. In the capital Tokyo, the ministry confirmed 3,042 new cases of the virus on Thursday. The figure was down 1,990 from a week ago. Seven people died after contracting COVID-19 in the capital. The number of seriously ill patients was 10, unchanged from Wednesday.
