The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ales Bialiatski, a human rights advocate from Belarus, and two organizations, Russia's Memorial and Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties. Berit Reiss-Andersen of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, "The Peace Prize laureates represent civil society in their home countries. They have for many years promoted the right to criticize power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens. They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human rights abuses and the abuse of power." The committee called the winners champions of democracy. All three have been working in the field for more than a decade. The announcement comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine -- which has been supported by Belarus.
