Zaporizhzhia governor: 12 people killed in Russian attack on city center NHK

The governor of the Zaporizhzhia region in southeastern Ukraine says Russian forces attacked the heart of the city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday, leaving 12 people dead and 49 others hospitalized.

Oleksandr Starukh said on the Telegram messaging app that five residential buildings were destroyed and a nine-story apartment building was partially damaged by the shelling.

The footage posted by the governor shows debris scattered around the damaged apartment building. It also shows people fleeing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the Telegram app on Sunday, "Zaporizhzhia again. Merciless strikes on peaceful people again."
He went on to say, "Absolute evil. Savages and terrorists...They will bear responsibility."

Russian assaults have been continuing in the region.
On September 30, Russian forces attacked civilians traveling in cars. Local authorities reported 30 people killed and 88 others wounded.

Last Thursday, a number of apartment buildings in the center of the city were also attacked, leaving 18 people dead.
