Funerals held for victims of Thai child care center attack NHK

Many people gathered in temples in northeast Thailand on Saturday to mourn victims killed in a rampage at a child care center.

A former police officer went on a rampage in the province of Nong Bua Lamphu on Thursday, killing 36 people including 24 children. He went home after the attack, and killed his wife and child before taking his own life.

The funeral was held in temples near the scene. Coffins were decked with photos of children who were killed as well as flowers, toys and sweets.

The region is one of the poorest in Thailand. Some people said they came from afar to pray for their children, since they usually work in cities outside the area.

The suspect was facing trial on drug possession charges and a ruling was expected on Friday. He also reportedly had an argument with his wife on the day of the attack. The police are investigating the motives behind the incident.
