The United States says it will tighten restrictions on exports of semiconductor-related products to China that could be used for military applications. The US Department of Commerce made the announcement on Friday. It said the aim is to protect the country's national security and foreign policy interests. The new rules will require obtaining a license from the department when exporting semiconductor-related products to designated Chinese firms. The targeted items are used in artificial intelligence and supercomputers that could also be applied to develop weapons of mass destruction and advanced military systems. The US government has already imposed export restrictions on semiconductors to Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies and other firms. Observers say Washington aims to curb China's development of supercomputers and production capacity of cutting-edge chips, as competition between the two countries intensifies in the high-tech field.
