Russia is facing mounting criticism from the international community over its massive attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine on Monday.
Russian missiles hit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the western region of Lviv and others, with targets including not only energy facilities but also a park and a museum in the capital. The Ukrainian State Emergency Service said 14 people were killed and 97 others were injured in the attacks.
Russia said the attacks were in retaliation for Saturday's explosion on a key bridge linking Russia and Crimea, which it criticized as an act of sabotage by Ukrainians.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video released on Monday that the Russian army specifically attacked those targets precisely during the morning rush hour. He called it a "typical terrorist tactic" aimed at inciting fear among the people.
Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly held an emergency session to discuss the conflict in Ukraine on Monday. Delegates from about 20 countries gave speeches, with many condemning Russia.
Turkey has served as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Its UN ambassador, Feridun Sinirlioglu, said, "While the whole world is calling for an end to the war, we woke up once again to shocking news this morning. The attacks by Russia against several cities of Ukraine that resulted in civilian casualties today, are deeply worrying and unacceptable."
Russia's UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Zelenskyy and those in the West who, in his words, set him up not to pursue a peaceful solution, but to war, are responsible for the Russian retaliatory measures.
