Typhoon Ampil is passing close to Japan&#039;s main island, lashing greater Tokyo and the Tohoku region with strong winds and heavy rain. Authorities are still urging people to stay safe, and avoid unnecessary outings.
                
Meteorological agency officials estimate that as of 1 a.m. Saturday, the typhoon was 150 kilometers east of Choshi City in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
                
It was moving north-northeast. Heavy rain and thunder are expected in some areas of the Kanto and Tohoku regions through Saturday.
                
Overseas travelers at one of Tokyo&#039;s popular tourist spots said the typhoon was forcing them to think carefully about their plans.
                
Power company officials say as of 11:30 p.m. Friday, more than 7,700 households in the Kanto region were without electricity.
                
Evacuation orders were issued for people in parts of Chiba and Fukushima prefectures.
                
Authorities have set up shelters across affected areas. Some residents of Minamiboso City in Chiba Prefecture sought refuge at an evacuation center.
                
Experts say disasters could occur even in areas far from the typhoon.
                
Weather officials are warning of landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, swelling and overflowing rivers, as well as powerful wind gusts.
