Japan hopes to convey the importance of stable bilateral relations to the government led by Prime Minister and acting President Han Duck-soo, as well as the ruling and opposition parties.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru told the Diet on Friday that he will place utmost priority on seeking cooperative ties with South Korea.

He said the relationship is extremely important "not only in terms of security, but also for the peace and independence of Japan and regional peace and stability."

Some government officials are concerned that Yoon's departure could set back moves to improve relations.

Others believe the importance of Japan-South Korea ties is clear in light of the increasingly harsh global situation. They say that momentum will not change regardless of who succeeds Yoon.
