Japan's new top government spokesperson Hayashi Yoshimasa has vowed to restore public trust in politics under the guidance of Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. On Thursday, Kishida replaced four of his Cabinet ministers over a fund-raising scandal involving the largest faction of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The first Cabinet meeting after the reshuffle took place on Friday. In his first news conference as chief cabinet secretary, Hayashi, a former foreign minister, said Kishida pledged to lead reform efforts in the LDP and restore public trust in politics. He said the government will work to attain this goal. Hayashi also said that work to draw up the budget and tax reform plans for the next fiscal year is now at a final stage. He said the government will continue to tackle key issues directly related to people's lives with a sense of urgency. He said the issue of suspected illegal handling of political funds by some LDP factions was not raised at the Cabinet meeting. Asked about the time frame for devising preventive measures, Hayashi said the top priority will be understanding the situation, and identifying the causes and problems. He said the government will then come up with specific plans.
