Typhoon Lan is moving north in the Pacific Ocean over waters near Japan's Ogasawara Islands. The typhoon is expected to make landfall between the Tokai region in central Japan, and the Shikoku region in western Japan on Tuesday.

It will continue to move northwest over waters south of Japan on Monday, before turning northward on Tuesday.

Lan is still far from the Japanese main island of Honshu. But rough seas are already forecast for the Pacific coast between the Kanto region including Tokyo in eastern Japan and the Kansai region in western Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says as of 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, the typhoon was moving west-northwest at a slow speed over waters 390 kilometers south of Hachijojima Island.

The typhoon has a central atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals. It is packing winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour, with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of up to 198 kilometers per hour.

Winds of more than 90 kilometers per hour are being recorded within a 95-kilometer radius from the typhoon's center.

High waves are already lashing the Pacific coast of Honshu and the Izu Islands. The islands will experience extremely rough seas on Sunday, with 8-meter waves and very strong winds.

Strong winds will also begin to arrive over on Monday in the regions of Tokai, Kansai and Shikoku, with winds of up to 108 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 144 kilometers per hour.

Thunderstorms and localized downpours are forecast for the Pacific coast of eastern and western Japan on Monday and Tuesday.

Heavy precipitation could cause mudslides and overflowing rivers.

Weather officials are calling on people to check emergency stocks, and locate high risk areas on local maps before the storm arrives.

They are also advised to follow weather updates as the typhoon could disrupt transportation during the annual Bon holiday period.
