New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election for late April, pledging to fight pressure from the US administration of President Donald Trump.



In a speech in Ottawa on Sunday, Carney said he will dissolve the House of Commons and hold a general election on April 28.



Carney said, "We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty."



Canadians fear that the tariffs being imposed by Washington could rekindle inflation. They are also reacting furiously to Trump's claim that Canada should be the 51st US state.



Carney was sworn in on March 14 after serving as central bank governor, first in Canada and then in Britain.



Approval ratings of his Liberal Party are making a remarkable recovery, due partly to people's expectations based on his track record as central banker.



A recent opinion poll conducted by public broadcaster CBC showed that the Liberals overtook the opposition Conservative Party.



Meanwhile, the Conservatives, who are aiming to retake power, are appealing to voters with their "Canada First" slogan and calling for retaliatory tariffs against the US.
