Iranians protest against Israel, US in Tehran NHK

People in the Iranian capital Tehran demonstrated against Israel and its backer, the United States, on Sunday. The protest came after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned of a retaliatory response for last month's Israeli attack.

The rally marked the 45th anniversary of the US Embassy takeover by Iranian students that led to a hostage crisis.

The protesters carried photos of the leaders of the Islamic group Hamas and the Lebanon-based Shia Muslim group Hezbollah who have been killed by the Israeli military.

They condemned Israel for striking military facilities in Iran and criticized the US for supporting the Israeli operations.

A 60-year-old demonstrator said Israel has engaged in US-backed acts of aggression to threaten Iranians, and Iran should retaliate severely.

Some protesters expressed concern that former US President Donald Trump could soon be reelected. Trump took a hardline stance toward Iran while in office.

An 18-year-old man said many Iranians think Trump should never be president again.
