Season's first red snow crab auction held in western Japan NHK

The season's first auction of red snow crabs was held on Thursday at a port in Kami Town in Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan.

The crab fishing season opened on Monday.

The auction of about 19 tons of crabs started at 6:00 a.m., after eight fishing boats unloaded their catches.

Kasumi port is the only one in the Kansai region involved in red snow crab fishing.

The crabs live in cold waters around 1,000 meters deep, and are known for their sweetness. They are auctioned as soon as they are unloaded.

The head of a local crab fishing association said it is focused on managing crab resources, as well as maintaining freshness and quality. He said he believes Kasumi crabs are the best.

Red snow crab fishing will continue through May next year.
