A court in South Korea has approved a request by a joint team of investigators to detain impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol over his short-lived imposition of martial law. The team, which includes the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, or CIO, said on Tuesday that the court issued the warrant against Yoon on charges of orchestrating insurrection. The investigation team filed the application for the warrant on Monday, after Yoon failed to comply with three summonses. It's the first measure of its kind against an incumbent South Korean president. A CIO official said the warrant is valid until January 6, but declined to comment on when it will be executed. A lawyer for Yoon called the warrant illegal and invalid. The defense team has submitted a court document arguing that the request is illegal because the CIO has no right to investigate Yoon on insurrection charges. The presidential office had previously blocked searches by the investigators.
