Taiwan's defense ministry details dozens of Chinese military sorties NHK

Taiwan's defense ministry says that numerous Chinese military jets and naval vessels conducted joint combat readiness patrols around Taiwan over the 24 hours to 6 a.m. on Tuesday.



The ministry announced in an update that Chinese military aircraft flew 59 sorties during the period while nine ships had been detected operating around Taiwan. It added that 43 of the 59 sorties crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and flew to the southwest and east of Taiwan.



China's military says it has regularly conducted such patrols. However, the latest one is on a relatively large scale.



Taiwan's defense ministry announced on Monday that the Chinese military was carrying out the patrols.



Responding to a reporter's question about the operation on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the United States over its Taiwan policy. Mao said China's military operation is necessary.



She said, "It's a firm response to forces who are hell-bent on abetting and aiding 'Taiwan independence'." The remark is apparently aimed at keeping the US in check.
