Britain's King Charles visits Germany on first state visit as monarch NHK

Britain's King Charles is in Germany on his first official trip abroad since ascending the throne in September.

Charles and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, arrived in Berlin on Wednesday. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife welcomed them with a ceremony at the historic Brandenburg Gate.

Charles will meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and give a speech to the country's parliament on Thursday. He will also meet Ukrainians who have taken refuge in Germany during the three-day visit.

The royal couple was scheduled to visit France first but postponed the visit due to intensifying protests over President Emmanuel Macron's pension reforms.

British media outlets reported that the British government urged Charles to make the visit. They said the trip aims to rebuild relations with countries of the European Union following Britain's departure from the bloc.

Charles' late mother, Queen Elizabeth, visited over 120 countries during her 70-year reign. Observers are keenly watching whether Charles will make his presence felt in Britain's diplomacy.
