China's new passenger jet starts commercial operation NHK

China's new domestically-produced passenger jet has started commercial operation.

The C919, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Cooperation of China, made its debut on Sunday with a trip from Shanghai to Beijing. The flight was operated by China Eastern Airlines.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the aircraft was delivered to the Shanghai-based carrier in December last year.

The new aircraft has about 160 seats. It will compete with the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737, which are widely used in China.

The state-owned developer is said to have received orders for more than 1,000 of the new aircraft, mainly from Chinese carriers.

The Chinese government has been working to domestically develop passenger aircraft as part of its goal of becoming a manufacturing powerhouse.

The ARJ21, a smaller domestically-produced passenger aircraft, already operates on flights connecting regional cities in the country.
