Rescue operations continue in Afghanistan on Tuesday, three days after powerful earthquakes left thousands dead. The governing Taliban say two magnitude-6.3 tremors hit the western part of the country on Saturday, killing at least 2,000 people and destroying about 2,000 houses. Taliban officials say they have sent more than 1,000 personnel on search and rescue operations in the hardest-hit province of Herat. Freelance journalists report residents are digging through rubble for survivors in some areas where rescuers and heavy machinery have not yet arrived. Several quakes have struck western Afghanistan since Saturday, including a magnitude-5.1 tremor on Monday. The journalists say workers have to suspend search operations every time there is a tremor. People in afflicted areas are calling on the Taliban to send more rescuers and machinery for the search operations. Experts say the chance of survival in a disaster drops substantially after the first 72 hours.
