Japan's government is planning a meeting next month in Hiroshima between Group of Seven leaders and atomic bomb survivors, known as hibakusha. The G7 Hiroshima Summit, set to begin on May 19, is the first summit to be held in the city where the US detonated an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. Final arrangements are underway for the leaders to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum on the summit's opening day. The government is also considering holding a meeting with hibakusha during the summit. The intent is to have the G7 leaders understand the horrors of nuclear weapons, and build up momentum towards abolishing them. Hiroshima city officials have asked the Japanese government to arrange a visit by G7 leaders to the museum, and meet with atomic bomb survivors. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has said he hopes his counterparts will join him in offering a strong message of peace at the summit meeting.
