UN says Palestinian-Israeli death toll highest since 2005 NHK

The United Nations' Middle East envoy says more than 200 Palestinians and nearly 30 Israelis have been killed so far this year in demonstrations, clashes, military operations and other incidents.

Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland told the Security Council on Monday that the number of fatalities has surpassed last year's toll and is the highest since 2005.

Wennesland said "Palestinians and Israelis are killed and injured in near-daily violence," and that "This violence is fueled and exacerbated by a growing sense of despair about the future."

He expressed deep concern over the situation amid the stalled peace process.
The Israeli military carried out large-scale operations in the West Bank in July, resulting in many Palestinian casualties.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticized what he described as an excessive use of force. He urged Israel to exercise restraint and abide by its obligations under international law.
