Japan's Rapidus says it will start operating a 2-nanometer semiconductor factory in Hokkaido this month as planned. The company expects to turn out a prototype chip around July. CEO Koike Atsuyoshi said on Tuesday the installation of equipment for pilot production had been completed at the plant. He noted that making 2-nanometer chips requires a precise process involving nearly 300 steps. Rapidus aims to begin mass production around 2027. Koike said Rapidus will move step by step to achieve its target yield rate and gain trust from customers. Global competition over 2-nanometer chips is heating up. Taiwan's TSMC and South Korea's Samsung Electronics plan to begin mass-producing the cutting edge semiconductor this year.
