Nihon Hidankyo, an organization representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has issued a statement urging the Japanese government to uphold the country's Three Non-Nuclear Principles. Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae was earlier asked in a Diet session whether language expressing Japan's commitment to the Three Non-Nuclear Principles would be retained in documents her administration aims to revise, such as the National Security Strategy. The principles state that Japan will not possess nuclear weapons, produce them or allow them to be brought into the country. Takaichi replied that it is not appropriate for her to comment on the wording at this stage. Nihon Hidankyo issued a statement on Thursday over the remarks by Takaichi and said it had been submitted to the Cabinet Office. In the statement, Nihon Hidankyo said that for many years, the organization has conveyed the realities of the atomic bombings and stressed that nuclear weapons cannot coexist with humanity. It also said that the atomic bombing survivors, or hibakusha, do not want anyone else to experience the hell they endured. The group stressed that the hibakusha can neither allow nuclear weapons to be brought into Japan, nor allow their country to become a base for a nuclear war or a target of a nuclear attack. Hidankyo urged the Japanese government to enshrine the Three Non-Nuclear Principles into law, sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, provide compensation to the atomic bombing victims as a country that waged the war, and take a leading role in building a world free of nuclear weapons and war.
