The Islamic group Hamas has released an image showing photographs of the hostages they are holding in the Gaza Strip, as Israeli forces go ahead with their ground operations in Gaza City. Hamas calls it "a parting image" of the captives as it strengthens its warning against Israel's move.
Israeli forces said on Saturday that they continue expanding their activities aimed at capturing Gaza City in the north of the strip. They said the troops dismantled numerous Hamas infrastructure sites, including tunnel shafts and sniper posts.
Hamas on Saturday released the image showing the faces of more than 40 hostages. Previously, the group warned in a statement that the captives are distributed within neighborhoods of Gaza City.
The city is said to be home to a population of nearly one million. People there have been forced to flee to the southern part of the strip after Israel called on all residents to evacuate.
Local authorities in Gaza said nearly 270,000 citizens have been compelled to leave the city.
But the authorities point out that there are shortages of basic necessities such as water, food and temporary housing in what Israel calls a "humanitarian zone" in the strip's south.
The authorities also say the zone has been subject to Israeli strikes. They have condemned Israel, while calling on the international community to take immediate and serious action to stop Israel's operations.
