The Japanese government will consider bestowing the People&#039;s Honor Award to wheelchair tennis star Kunieda Shingo, who announced his retirement last month.
                
Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu told reporters on Friday that Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has given instructions to consider conferring the award.
                
Matsuno said Kunieda&#039;s accomplishments are unprecedented, having played at the world&#039;s top level for nearly 20 years.
                
He also noted Kunieda&#039;s contributions to the spread of para sports and the development of sports as a whole. He said Kunieda inspired many Japanese to pursue their dreams, and brought hope and courage to society.
                
Kunieda has competed in five consecutive Paralympics, winning his fourth gold medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Three were in singles events and one in doubles.
                
The 38-year-old clinched his first Wimbledon singles title last year to complete his Career Golden Slam of all four Grand Slam events and the Paralympics.
                
Kunieda would be the first para athlete to be given the People&#039;s Honor Award, if chosen.
                
The government plans to make a final decision after hearing the opinions of relevant parties.
