ASEAN's special envoy to Myanmar is reportedly visiting the country's capital, Naypyitaw. He is expected to hold talks with junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on how to bring peace to the war-torn country. The newly appointed delegate, Othman Hashim, is a former secretary-general of the foreign ministry of Malaysia, which is chairing the bloc this year. Multiple media outlets say Othman will urge Min Aung Hlaing to implement the Five-Point Consensus agreed by ASEAN and the junta in 2021 shortly after the coup. The peace plan calls for an immediate halt to violence. Othman is also expected to discuss with the junta leader how to engage with pro-democracy forces fighting the military. Four years after the military seized power, Myanmar remains wracked by fighting between the military and pro-democracy forces, along with armed ethnic minority groups. A local human rights group says more than 6,000 civilians and pro-democracy activists have been killed. The actual death toll is likely to be much higher as the number doesn't include unverified deaths and those on the military side.
