Chinese authorities say a magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit the Tibet Autonomous Region. The state-run Xinhua News Agency says 53 people have been confirmed dead and 62 others injured. More than 1,000 residences have been damaged. The China Earthquake Networks Center says the quake struck around 9:05 a.m. Tuesday in Dingri County. Its focus is estimated to be 10 kilometers deep. The US Geological Survey has put the magnitude of the quake at 7.1. State media outlets are reporting the collapse of multiple buildings near the epicenter, with footage showing heavily damaged brick structures. Dingri County borders Nepal. According to the Chinese media, the area near the epicenter is about 4,000 meters in elevation. The area is also known as a tourist destination, with hotels and restaurants and a view of Mount Everest. The area had a population of about 60,000 as of 2021. The local government is urgently confirming the extent of the damage, dispatching firefighters and rescuers. A magnitude 7.8 quake that hit neighboring Nepal in April, 2015, killed about 9,000 people.
