A group of young craftworkers is holding an event in Tokyo, selling lacquerware that escaped damage in the New Year&#039;s Day Noto Peninsula earthquake.
                
The sales event of Wajima-nuri lacquerware began on Wednesday at the Isetan department store in the Shinjuku district. The 12 craftworkers who organized the event are based in Ishikawa Prefecture&#039;s Wajima City.
                
About 120 items that survived the quake are on display, including black lacquer bowls and bright red tiered food boxes. There are also trays decorated with fine cherry-blossom and maple-leaf patterns in gold.
                
The craftworkers said it is difficult to get enough water to produce their crafts, as many areas of Wajima City are still without running water.
                
They also said many workshops collapsed in the quake, and it is unclear when they can resume production. The group wants to use the proceeds from the sales event for recovery efforts.
                
The head of the group, Daiku Haruhiko, said many people may be seeing Wajima&#039;s lacquerware for the first time. He said he hopes people will take this opportunity to appreciate their beauty and visit Wajima when it is rebuilt to see various works.
                
The event will run through February 27.
