Houthis fire ballistic missile against US cargo ship in Red Sea NHK

The US military says the Houthi anti-government group in Yemen has attacked a US cargo ship in the Red Sea.

The US Central Command announced that the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen at around 4 p.m. on Monday local time.

The Central Command also said that the missile struck a container ship owned and operated by a US company as it was navigating through the southern Red Sea.

The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey.

The Central Command added that US forces detected another anti-ship ballistic missile being fired toward the southern Red Sea about two hours earlier in the day.

A spokesperson for the Houthi group claimed responsibility for the missile attack on a US cargo ship in a social media post.

The spokesperson said that all US and British ships and warships will be targets.

The Houthi missile attack is believed to have been in retaliation for the US strikes last week against the group's sites, including its radar facility in Yemen.

There are mounting concerns that a possible escalation in clashes between the US and the Houthis could heighten tensions in the region.
