Claudia Sheinbaum has been sworn in as Mexico's first female president. Sheinbaum took the oath of office in the capital, Mexico City, on Tuesday. In an inauguration speech, she said, "I am a mother, a grandmother, a scientist and a woman of faith, and from today, by the will of the Mexican people, the president." Legislators on the floor of Congress shouted "Presidenta" -- the feminine form of president in Spanish -- to celebrate the birth of the country's female leader. Sheinbaum ran in the June presidential election with the ruling leftist party Morena and defeated the opposition candidate by a wide margin. The 62-year-old scientist researched climate change, before serving as the first female mayor of the capital from 2018 to 2023. Mexico faces the challenge of restoring security amid a wave of violent crimes, including murders and kidnappings by drug cartels. The country could also be affected by American immigration and trade policies, depending on the results of the US presidential election in November.
