The CEO of the Chinese firm operating the video-sharing app TikTok will testify before a US congressional committee in March amid rising concern about information leaks to Beijing via the platform. The House Energy and Commerce Committee said in a statement on Monday that TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will appear at a hearing on March 23. It says he will come to testify about TikTok's consumer privacy and data security practices. The committee says: "ByteDance-owned TikTok has knowingly allowed the ability for the Chinese Communist Party to access American user data. Americans deserve to know how these actions impact their privacy and data security." The firm insists that it is not influenced by Beijing. In December, however, Congress passed a bill to ban the use of TikTok on government devices. Observers say even the CEO's testimony may not help ease US concerns about information leaks. The focus now is to what extent the US will tighten its regulations on the platform.
