A multilateral maritime drill has kicked off at the Indonesian island of Bali. The United States and China are among 38 nations participating in the exercise, which is aimed at easing tensions in areas including the disputed South China Sea. First launched in 2014, the exercises known as "Komodo" began on Saturday, with Russia and Japan also taking part. More than 30 vessels, maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters are involved. Participants will confirm cooperation in fields such as disaster mitigation and humanitarian assistance. Apart from at-sea training, they will also exchange opinions on illegal fishing, smuggling and illegal migrants. After an opening ceremony on Sunday, the Indonesian Naval Chief of Staff expressed his hope that the exercise could also help ease tensions among countries at odds. Admiral Muhammad Ali said the exercise also aims to reduce tensions in the Red Sea, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and also various countries now full of conflicts. The week-long drill will continue through Saturday.
